  1. Augmented Reality

    December 18, 2010 by Asim

Augmented Reality is the future, i’ve been ranting and raving about it since 2006. The buzz around the word lens app for the iPhone is really just proving my belief that augmented reality will become common place over the next 20 years.

Moore’s Law doesn’t seem to be any closer to becoming defunct this exponential growth in technology and technical ability is going to be with us for many, many years to come.

The idea of being as connected to information as I am right now is something I couldn’t have even dreamed of in 2000. Yet 10 years later I’m sitting in an airport waiting to go on holiday, typing this on my iPad -don’t judge me courier got cancelled- watching everyone else just immersed in their own personal technology created worlds of games, music and communication. I couldn’t have done this as little as 5 years ago let alone 10 so it makes me wonder whats on the horizon for the next 5 years.

But is technology such a good thing? I’m on the fence about it, It is really dumbing us down, information overload, we can get anything we want at a time that suits us, is that making us lazy is it ruining our attention span?

People are nowhere near as patient as they once were,  our attention spans have dropped considerably. We’ve all been there when we get irritated just waiting a minute or 2 for a lift or elevator.

Right now the big step for augmented reality is the idea of goggles – google goggles if you will – it would be similar to the word lens style of technology but transmitted through to a pair of  glasses or a headset. While this and the applications it could have for us could be amazing. Are we forgetting how to learn and live life without technology?

Word Lens app translates from English to Spanish and vice-versa, with technology like that, will we ever need to learn anything again? That is something of a scary thought.

  2. Self-imposed veganism

    September 17, 2010 by Asim

I set myself the bar of going from the 6th of August to the 6th of December as a vegan. I have stumbled along the way, eating a Tuna sandwich last weekend. But what i’m really struggling with is the lack of dairy, in all honesty I’m wanting to quit cos soy milk is disgusting beyond belief.

In this era of “enlightenment” Its prudent to note that if we were all to go vegetarians, and replaced excess grazing land for animals destined to end up in a half eaten burger, with crops we’d have enough food to feed the world 4 times over.

I’ll admit to the dirty fact that I do like meat and I love fish so I go with a few month stints of vegetarianism before returning to cooked carcasses for protein. While I can’t commit to the vegetarian lifestyle for longer than 2 years, I’ve never tried veganism before. Its doubtful i’ll last another week let alone the 3 months I have remaining.

    Sad times

  3. Paying for the Privilege

    September 4, 2010 by Asim

I know in this day and age of distractions that people find it hard to connect with others. Its perhaps why social networking is so popular, but I came across this a few minutes ago, and well it made me giggle.

    Gamecrush

All you need to get started is a computer and either a webcam or the console you want to play. You can play the casual online games we offer right here on our site, but you can also play on other platforms as well. The more games you are available to play, the more GameCrush Players will want to play you!

From what I can gleam its an escort service for gamers. I dunno, it made me giggle, why people who play multiplayer online games (usually for a fee) would want to pay for for the privilege of playing with other people?

It was beyond my minuscule mind who came up with the business plan for that, but then it dawned on me, its no doubt going to be lonely men who’d use this service, and they are going to want to have contact and play with women. Really is this a form of internet “prostitution”? I’m not certain but it seems like a less risqué version of “cam-girls“.

  4. Science Proves it.

    April 3, 2010 by Asim

Women are bad for men’s mental health according to this article I found while perusing some of my old scientific journals. Found something amazing from the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology some zany Dutch scientists have apparently proven that when around women men have poorer cognitive skills cos they are too busy trying to impress the women.

Researchers at the Radboud University in the Netherlands, conducted two studies that showed that when engaged in mixed-sex interactions the males displayed high levels of self-presentation, which were shown to deplete the male subjects’ cognitive resources, as measured in poorer performances on cognitive assessments after such interactions.

I’m trying to figure out if its got scientific merit or if its just another no shit Sherlock case of non science.

you can buy and read the journal here

Although my fave scientific paper recent years was published in Infectious Diseases Modelling Research Progress and was all about Zombie Infection and zombie infection rates (if they existed)! How insanely mad scientist is that? The man behind the report has the demeanour of a mad scientist especially since he’s named Professor Robert Smith? (he got his name changed to add the ? so he could be found on the internet easier), he is our saviour, his publication outlines what we need to do to beat the zombie scum.

    You can find that here
and more about Professor Robert Smith?
