Non Conformist

So couple of things really, first of all, Raymond Mearns one of my favourite comedians on the planet has graciously given me 5 minutes at his gig in largs on the 5th of September.

He remains to this day, one of my 3 favourite Scottish Comedians, the other 2 are Bruce Morton and Paul Sneddon (you can find links to their respective sites elsewhere on the site). It’ll be the first time I’ll be preforming with one of my heros, and hopefully not the last, so the really hoping impress they’ve all helped me in some way or another and I want to show them I’ve taken their advice and am a better performer for it.

In other news, I’m really annoyed at how I’m caught in this limbo for a normal day job, being over qualified for some jobs, and under experienced for others. Had a few phone interviews, hopefully they’ll lead to something.

Mad props go out to James Kirk for winning So you think you’re funny 2010. Thoroughly deserved, he’s a fantastic act and a definite breath of fresh air.

I may enter next year not certain, but James is a hard act to follow, I think he’s the first Scottish act to win it in a long time. If I’m correct in my assumption he’s the first Scottish act to win since 1992. But never the less, he’s a fantastic act, and a very nice guy to boot!

Really happy for him!

Today’s Blawg title comes from an awesome slipknot song.

Saw Daniel Kitson and David o’Doherty preform yesterday. They were awesome, it made me wish I was a better comedian, Kitson was able to get a laugh from putting his jumper over his head, thats how awesome he was.

I don’t get it, material one week kills, the next week it falls flat on its arse. It wasn’t a bad gig, I just usually do a hell of a lot better, I’m quite upset by how well it went.

One week the stuff rips the roof off, the next week, I get a few chuckles and some laughter, its confusing, I don’t know if the material sucks, or if I delivered it badly, or if was a bad crowd, everything is just too subjective in this business.

But i’ll do a rewrite again.

its hard coming up with blog titles that have nothing to do with the content of the post. Today’s title comes from @awlbiste thank you!

Anyway new act competitions are a godsend, I know I said earlier how much I need to avoid them, but thanks to advice given to me by @comedyteddy, I’ll be doing a lot more of them, he also told me that: “Bitterness is key to being a comedian & competitions are a valuable source of it.

So to that end I’m currently in the heats for the old speckled hen new act of the year competition, that’ll be played out on the 25th of September, and i’ve applied to do the FHM new act of the year competition. Off the back of take the mic and a few stand appearances I’ve got a few more open spots lined up, well in talks right now anyway, once they are completed I’ll add them to gig list.

Lets hope I can continue with the gig momentum and get a job while I’m at it.
