Ikky Sticky
I don’t get it, material one week kills, the next week it falls flat on its arse. It wasn’t a bad gig, I just usually do a hell of a lot better, I’m quite upset by how well it went.
One week the stuff rips the roof off, the next week, I get a few chuckles and some laughter, its confusing, I don’t know if the material sucks, or if I delivered it badly, or if was a bad crowd, everything is just too subjective in this business.
But i’ll do a rewrite again.

I was at the So You Think You’re Funny (SYTYF) Glasgow Heats, it was a good evening! Some really fantastic acts, special mad props are being thrown out to Sarah Cassidy for being fabulous tonight, my favourite act of the evening. She was fantastic tonight, the last time I saw her gig was in March, and she’s come along leaps and bounds since. Absolutely brilliant, some really strong new material, she’ll only continue to grow and grow!
Everyone else was pretty damn good too, too many folk to name and individually give praise to, but on the whole a very good evening! I never applied to do this competition, probably a good thing too, I wouldn’t want to compete against any of the folk that were on tonight, they were that good.
On that note, stand up competitions are a bit of a white elephant for me anyway, I don’t really want to do them, a number of comedians asked me why I hadn’t entered SYTYF, to save myself from the a number of “oh you should have you’d have done…” conversations I just told them, I missed the deadline that I’ll do it next year. Which for me is a big ass lie, I doubt I’m going to do it next year.
I somewhat fearful of being having my stand up critiqued, especially when I’m against my peers and people I’d consider friends. I’m critical enough of my performances, even the good ones, I still hate myself and my act afterwards.
I was Ross Main, another fabulous comedian who also did absolutely amazing tonight -probably my second favourite of the evening-, that talked me into applying for Take the Mic, using the line “what have you got to lose?”, now in the post apocalyptic world of take the mic, I tell you Ross what I have lost, my self respect, my pride and of course my will to live, thanks Ross, but to be fair to you, I never had much of the aforementioned anyway =)
Competitions are very daunting, and I don’t have the guts to do any more right now, rejection is scary, especially early on in a comedy career but, I’ve got a damn load of respect for those comedians that do and are willing to put themselves up to that kind of external scrutiny.
Anyway, fingers crossed its one of my peeps wins SYTYF, and that way I can ride their coat tails into gigs!
Finally onto a small matter of housekeeping now, i’d like to thank whoever it was, who visited the site for 14 minutes yesterday you were probably a bot, but, you pushed my site visitor stats to a new high, over 1000 visitors a week! Lets hope you’re not all bots.
In the meantime, writing my new material for the halt on Tuesday, should be epic, I’m on with 2 really good friends, the afore mentioned Ross Main, an old Friend that I known since way before either of us did Stand up, Daniel Webster and, 2 other veterans from Take the Mic Glasgow finals, including the winner, all in all, should be a good night!

Well, simply put, my worst gig to date I feel, people of course will and have said otherwise. But you go on how you do the act and how you preform the set.
Personally I thought I was abysmal, I missed out a 2 line joke, fluffed a line, missed a beat, and talked to a member of the audience and used the mic out the stand.
Well the last one wasn’t my fault, no mic stand, the evening itself, really odd night of a loud crowd and a noisy bar, not really with comedy gig etiquette. But the venue will be playing host to the new jongleurs when it returns to Glasgow, and I can really see it working, with a comedy audience. One of the acts who will remain nameless but will forever be known as “twatbag” at least to me, irritated the fuck out of me, he had pretty shit 1960′s style working mens club jokes, and had the swagger of a 1950′s Glasweigan Gangster, this man also had the audacity of talking loudly during other peoples sets.
I was not pleased, not pleased one bit.
But that aside, for my post gig post-mortem. I was not really comfortable on stage, I didn’t get into the rhythm, nor did I in fact enjoy it, I said a line early and had to repeat it,I then missed a 2 line joke I wrote. Following on from that I used a really shit joke that I wrote thinking it was hilarious a few hours before the gig, MAN i was wrong, worst joke of the evening.
Pretty miffed off with myself, I know I could have done way better, I have done way better in the past. But; even if I had done my best skits and best delivery, I doubt I’d have made the top spot, It was a good evening despite having twatbag there.
Was won by a pretty good act, a Mr Mike Adams, hopefully he’ll do well in the finals, take bring the glory to Glasgow, where it belongs!
Really quite irritated with myself though, but onwards and upwards, a bit more mic experience maybe taking it out the mic stand more often would be good!

I got there early very early, in fact so early the only person in the gig area was me the very bored barmaid (Kerry) and the sound guy.
But the gig soon packed out and despite my extreme hatred of going on first, I was on first, and a fabulous response to the new set, quite similar to the one I preformed at the stand and the one I preformed at the Royal Society a few months back, but the ending was quite different and I was able to throw a few more jokes in the interim.
Fabulous wee venue, and I was able to see some brilliant acts! All in all a great evening.
I’ll be playing there again on the 22nd of June, with my main homedog Ross the Manly Man Main also on the billing will be epic.
Looking forward I got Lanark on Friday so it should be good heading down with my amigo Ross on the train, we’ll be filming the sets we do there and some of the journey to and from the venue, they’ll be on the intertubes not long afterwards! Fun times =D

Well its a superb venue. The Glasgow Stand has to be one of the best places to gig in Scotland. Its fabulous, I’m sure more eloquent people are able to talk more about the nuances of the venue and how the intimate settings provide for some of the best stand up performances I’ve ever seen.
Well that aside need to do a post mortem of the Gig, 5 minute set I think I used roughly 4.30, rushed the ending cos I was afraid i’d run out of time, but other than that people loved it.
In addition to that I think i’m going to need to re-write the ending and rejig the middle material, its good and strong enough as it is now, but I want something with a bit more oomph. But i’ll think on that after I get my dissertation done. Next Glasgow gig is the 25th of May at the halt bar, should be good.
