Holiday Irks
January 2, 2011 by Asim
I do get easily irritated, its a damn irritation. If I have to fly anywhere by the time we land I’m the most irritable dude on the planet. That is all thanks to the fact that I’m afraid of flying. Flight simulator 98 + a flight where the wing caught fire = a nervous passenger. My hatred and fear of flying aside, one thing above all else irritated the hell out of me while I was in Egypt and in Italy earlier last year.
Hearing the word “facebook” being used in dozens of foreign languages. Everything from Spanish to Finnish to Dutch, I heard so many fellow tourists use the word. It was usually followed with variations on the word profile or update. You’re on holiday, who knows if you’ll ever see or experience what you are doing again? Yet all you are worried about is your damn facebook profile picture and/or status update.
Facebook is a great tool but its like we’re all becoming slaves to it.

High Tech?
December 28, 2010 by Asim
My love hate relationship with technology continues. It is absolutely fascinating what has happened in my lifetime alone. We’ve went from the Original Metroid
released in 1986 -a side scrolling action game released on the NES- . To these ever increasingly complicated and visually stunning games and consoles. New and innovative ways of actually controlling the action on the screen. The wii, the Playstation move the Kinect. To things like the birth of the public Internet, its insane. We’ve made these massive leaps and bounds in a very short space of time, the stuff i’ve seen is fantastic, what the next generation will see over the course of their lives will be mind blowing.
I pulled out my old -and only PDA- my Palm Tungsten T, that after getting a charge still works after 8 years. I remember I saved up for months and months to be able to afford it. It was the shiz I got 16mb of Memory, voice recorder, bluetooth & an alarm clock for my money.
I barely used the thing once I got it but still, now my mobile phone is more high tech than my first 3 computers combined.

Augmented Reality
December 18, 2010 by Asim
Augmented Reality is the future, i’ve been ranting and raving about it since 2006. The buzz around the word lens app for the iPhone is really just proving my belief that augmented reality will become common place over the next 20 years.
Moore’s Law doesn’t seem to be any closer to becoming defunct this exponential growth in technology and technical ability is going to be with us for many, many years to come.
The idea of being as connected to information as I am right now is something I couldn’t have even dreamed of in 2000. Yet 10 years later I’m sitting in an airport waiting to go on holiday, typing this on my iPad -don’t judge me courier got cancelled- watching everyone else just immersed in their own personal technology created worlds of games, music and communication. I couldn’t have done this as little as 5 years ago let alone 10 so it makes me wonder whats on the horizon for the next 5 years.
But is technology such a good thing? I’m on the fence about it, It is really dumbing us down, information overload, we can get anything we want at a time that suits us, is that making us lazy is it ruining our attention span?
People are nowhere near as patient as they once were, our attention spans have dropped considerably. We’ve all been there when we get irritated just waiting a minute or 2 for a lift or elevator.
Right now the big step for augmented reality is the idea of goggles – google goggles if you will – it would be similar to the word lens style of technology but transmitted through to a pair of glasses or a headset. While this and the applications it could have for us could be amazing. Are we forgetting how to learn and live life without technology?
Word Lens app translates from English to Spanish and vice-versa, with technology like that, will we ever need to learn anything again? That is something of a scary thought.
